Rosenstiel School Grants & Scholarships

  • Linda Farmer Student Research Endowed Award

    Supports marine science B.S. majors conducting independent research with a faculty mentor.

    • Amount up to $3,627.
    • Open to Rosenstiel School undergraduates pursuing a B.S. in marine sciences.
    • Within one week of receiving the award, the recipient must provide a written, signed thank you note (postal mail) with details about their research, addressed to The Family of Dr. Linda Farmer, hand delivered to Ruth Goodin, 210C Ungar Building. She will post the letter once received.

  • Lou and Chosun Mastriani Endowed Scholarship

    Scholarship support for Rosenstiel undergraduates with preference given to students studying or conducting research in marine biology, ecology, or coral reefs.

    • Amount up to $2,000 to one to three students per year with up to $6,000 total available this year.
    • Preference for marine biology and ecology or coral reefs.
    • Within one week of receiving the award, the recipient must provide a written, signed thank you note (postal mail) with details about their research, addressed to Lou and Chosun Mastriani, hand delivered to Ruth Goodin, 210C Ungar Building. She will post the letter once received.

  • Robins Family Undergraduate Research Scholarship

    Funding for undergraduate research in fields covered by the Rosenstiel School undergraduate academic program.

    • Amount up to $5,000 per student researcher this year split among two or more students with up to $10,000 total available this year.
    • Within one week of receiving the award, the recipient must provide a written, signed thank you note (postal mail) with details about their research, addressed to the Robins Family, hand delivered to Ruth Goodin, 210C Ungar Building. She will post the letter once received.

  • SURGE (Small Undergraduate Research Grant Experience) Awards

    Modest grants for undergraduate research with top priorities for fieldwork participation and conference presentations.

    • Amount up to $2,500 per student researcher.
    • Documented need for research supplies beyond the mentor laboratory capability is required.
    • Funds are disbursed to the student and not to faculty accounts.

  • Eligibility and How to Apply

    Who can apply

    • Rosenstiel School undergraduate major including first year students.
    • Enrolled during the semester of the grant award.
    • In good standing (not on probation, leave of absence, or suspension).

    What funding can support

    • Materials, supplies, analyses, and minor equipment that support substantive research activities.
    • Costs of field work or visits to archives related to independent research.
    • Attendance and presentations at scientific meetings or conferences where original work is presented.

    Application package

    • Short research proposal maximum two pages with a clear statement of purpose and summary of activities that identifies your research mentor or supervisor.
    • Itemized budget including any total costs above the award and disclosure of other available support.
    • Standard resume (maximum two pages).
    • Letter of support from your advisor or faculty research mentor addressed to the Rosenstiel School Undergraduate Program Awards Committee sent separately by your advisor or mentor and titled Student’s Lastname Recommendation Farmer or Mastriani or Robins or SURGE Award.
